Happy Halloween 2020 from Averi and Cici!

Stop me if you've heard this bit before, but... Halloween 2020 isn't over until I say it is!

And how could it possibly be over without a visit from Averi and Cici!  Okay, they didn't actually "visit".  In fact, they wisely went nowhere on this most unusual (and downright scary) of Halloweens!

But here they are nonetheless, making the day wonderful in their own special way!

Glad to hear you and yours are staying safe. Yesterday, I somehow forgot it was Halloween! I decided to go out for a walk. It quickly dawned on me that it was Halloween. But I figured, "Surely there can't be many people out. It's freezing, and we're in the middle of a pandemic." Boy was I wrong. People were everywhere. D'oh! There was a particularly large crowd in front of a house that flies a certain flag with a certain name on it, that starts with "T." Shaking my head in disbelief, I turned around and went back home. Now, I lean conservative myself, but it really saddens me to see supporters of you-know-who politicizing public health guidelines. All I can say is there better be a vaccine sooner rather than later...

Anyway, enough griping. I'm glad the unusual circumstances of 2020 didn't stop Averi and Cici from having Halloween fun in their own, safe way. It kind of reminds me of Linus inventing his own Halloween tradition, the Great Pumpkin. I watched "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" for the first time the other day, and while I enjoyed it, part of me wished that Linus and Sally had seen the Great Pumpkin. It's not how you celebrate that matters, it's that you had fun.

Here, Halloween was a perfect fall day – just a bit nippy but very clear and sunny – yet there was no one in sight! At any time of the day!

I was performing outside chores in the front of the house (masked) for a fair part of the afternoon (prime-kiddie-trick-or-treating-time), and my house is just to the east of a “T-Intersection” of residential streets. That means I have a clear and unobstructed view of my own street (east and west), as well as an unobstructed view of the street that would form “the stem of the “T” (looking north). Envision an upside-down “T”, and that’s what it is.

In three directions, as far as the eye could see, there was NO ONE out observing Halloween in any way, shape, of form! There were no doorbell-rings at any time, all day. While I could attribute that to my sign, I believe there was more at work than just that.

Averi and Cici had fun because they’re still unaware of “what they didn’t have”. Avi *is* aware of Halloween but, still not quite three years old, has not yet gotten into the trick-or-treating groove. And Cici only has, at this point, less than a month’s worth of total accumulated awareness – period.

So, it’s not a big deal for them… I guess! But I *do* really feel sorry for the kids who enjoy this once-a-year event, and could not partake of it in 2020. That’s one they’ll never get back!

And, you know… whether you’re seeing "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" for the first time, or saw it on its original airing as I did, or as many times in between, it’s still a piece of timeless magic! And will always be, pandemic or not!
