It's OUT and We're IN!

MICKEY MOUSE #3 (Legacy Number #333 - funny how that works out, eh?) from Fantagraphics,  concluding the "Ripples In Time" / Rhyming Man and Uma adventure, is OUT as of March 18, 2026.

We are (finally) IN our new house and the literal construction dust is finally beginning to settle (...mostly onto the floors and furniture - necessitating more and more clean up) but, at last, we can begin discussing both - or any topic of your choice once again.

Hopefully, more MICKEY than HOUSE... just to keep me from more sobbing!

HAPPY NEW YEAR - 2026!

 HAPPY NEW YEAR - 2026!

We open with Donald Duck ushering in the new year with that little-known Duckburgian tradition (…Golly, Duckburg sure has a lot of little-known traditions, doesn’t it?) of smashing open the Official Glass New Year’s Pineapple!  It’s kinda like the Times Square Ball Drop, only more breakable and with a shorter distance to travel before it’s done!

So, let’s join him in raising a Glass New Year’s Pineapple, and smashing it to little pieces on the floor!

And, while you’re at it, please join *me* in another year of Blogging – sporadic as it (…and everything else I do) will be until our move is completed and our lives return to what passes for “normal”

We'll get to the joyous backlog of comments very soon.  Please keep ‘em coming, as it remains my favorite part of what we do here!

Finally, I’ve all but abandoned any thoughts of shuttering this humble Blog, sporadic as it may continue to be.  Thanks for the support you’ve all given me to arrive at that decision!

 Happy 2026!

Happy Boxing Day!

 HAPPY BOXING DAY!

When you miss Christmas, due to the life-crushing, moving-related chaos and disorganization that has come to dominate our lives over the last few months, it's nice to know that BOXING DAY always has your back!

Sorry to all - Mouse Maestro, Achille Talon, and Scarecrow33 in particular - for not getting to them in anything resembling our old standard of response time!

We'll get it together (hopefully) soon. Just know how much I appreciate ALL of your contributions and support!

Now It Can Be Told!

The time has come, the Walrus said...

...To speak of many things!

...Of why this Blog was left for dead...

...Despite your many "pings"!

My sincerest apologies to all you wonderful friends (friends both to me and to this humble Blog) for your concern - and especially your continued contact with comments - and it's time I finally shared the long, long story.

Frankly, from mid-summer until very recently, it's been a bad time for us.

To those brave solus that inquired, my stock reply was "It's not health! It's not divorce! Anything else can work itself out!"

And, after a long series of unpleasant experiences that brought us unprecedented levels of stress, things did - actually, and in total - work themselves out!

I'll not go into details, as living through it once was difficult enough, but neither Esther nor I were at fault... and, paradoxically, we also both were!

BUT, IT'S OVER NOW!  HOORAY!

The end result is that we are moving! But a mere 6.30 miles from our present address. There were reasons having to do with the neighborhood - one that I've lived in (or around) since I was 14 (with only some small breaks) - but, having spent some time at our future address just this very day, we both love it, and can't wait until our closing date.

So, I thank you for sticking with us, lo these many blog-barren months - and especially for all the comments, which kept coming in despite my lack of response.  I WILL (hopefully) GET TO THEM ALL IN THE NEAR FUTURE, among and around the herculean task of packing for the move!

The comments actually meant a great deal to me as (...if you've followed some squarely-dropped hints) I was - and, to some degree, still am - considering ending this Blog.  I will do a post as to WHY at some point, but you're welcome to drop an opinion of your own!

TO HAPPIER THINGS:  My work with Fantagraphics and Gold Key continues with great stuff coming from both publishers... and then there's THIS...

YES!!!  IT'S MICKEY!!!  IT'S THE PHANTOM BLOT!!! ...and I'm there, too!

I must have turned this in close to two years ago, but IT'S FINALLY HERE!

And, if I've got the schedule right, Issues 2 and 3 will have an amazing story by Casty (...with me as a hanger-on... of the "for dear life" variety) using another villain from the Gottfredson/Walsh era who has been too seldom seen - and, as a writer, I can say - with good reason!  GREAT VILLAIN, but very hard to write.  Some of you should guess it pretty quickly, with THAT hint!

It WAS the most difficult and effort-intensive task I ever performed for Fantagraphics (...and all those drop-out Disney publishers that preceded them)... but I did it for our esteemed editor David Gerstein, for Mickey, for the Very-Hard-To-Write-Villain... and especially for YOU!

Gold Key is way too early to talk about, but I've taken on some interesting duties there as well.

See you in the Comments Section (...I hope?)

Back in Action - Soon!

My apologies to everyone who continues to follow this humble Blog during this period of silence!

Especially to those who have left so many comments!  I hope to get to them very soon... and keep sending them, if you're so inclined, because I appreciate them more than you know!

...They may very well be what keeps (all together now) this humble Blog sputtering along - through and beyond a period during which I've seriously considered giving it up!  ...You may have gleaned that in some of my recent comment replies, but I now have more hope that we should press on just as it - and *you- have been lately!

It's been a rough patch for a while, but now we're coming out of it... MEANWHILE, be sure you read the NEW FANTAGRAPHICS UNCLE SCROOGE!!!  It's GREAT!  Accept no substitute-Scrooges from a host of Scroogey-Come-Latelies!  THESE are the REAL DEAL!

There's Just Something About a Pink Bow...

A universal shorthand technique in creating a female counterpart to a male character - in animation and in comics - is to give that counterpart a HAIR BOW... usually pink!

But, how would that play out in real life?  Well, Cici's here to show you!

...And doesn't she look CUTE?  With or without the bow!

Adventures in Comic-Boxing: I Wanna BE This Guy!

Man!  Not only does he have ALL THAT going for him, but he even gets to be featured on the the back cover of REAL SCREEN COMICS # 15 (Published by DC Comics, Cover Date: December 1947 / January 1948)!

Why, just reading his list of accomplishments and future aspirations is enough to give an average student an inferiority complex!  (Click to Enlarge for ease of reading!)

You were OVER SIX FEET TALL... IN HIGH SCHOOL!?  ...In 1947, yet?

I've been out of high school for over fifty years, and I haven't reached that yet!  And I'm not very... er, "high" on my future chances...

As this is 1947, he even got to hear President Dwight D. Eisenhower BEFORE he was president!

...And, while most of the nation "liked Ike", Ike probably "liked HIM!"

Contrary to the request made above by "The Box in Pink", I cannot "...watch this space for the high school champ of [my] locality", because my high school wasn't built until 1956!

Yeah, I know... That's exactly the kind of excuse-laden, non-positive thinking that never won me any class honors beyond "Most Likely to Collect a Lot of Comic Books".

In addition to our esteemed Mr. Friedman, REAL SCREEN COMICS # 15 featured a number of other role-model types for "what passed for the comic book nerds and geeks of 1947" to aspire to.

On the INSIDE BACK COVER (the REVERSE of Tommy's page) was this...

Then again, if there was anyone I would have wanted to be, had I existed in 1947, it would most likely be the guy in THIS INTERIOR AD!

Seriously, "Tommy" (or Mr. Friedman), if you're really out there, please accept my kidding in the spirit of kindly humor with which it is intended!

Hope it all worked out exactly as you planned!

Adventures in Comic-Boxing: Comics DIGESTS?

Wrong CAPTION, or wrong PHOTO... You decide...

If they're COMICS, I don't recognize any of the characters!  But the ART seems to be good, even if a tad small!  And wouldn't those POSTMARKS devalue the comic's condition from a FINE/NEAR MINT to a GOOD MINUS?

But the worst thing about them is that they look VERY DIFFICULT TO READ! ...Kinda skimpy on PAGE COUNT, too!

...Maybe they're COMICS DIGESTS?  ...But VERY SLIM comics digests!

Unlike this one...

Yeah, that's more like it!

Now, let's just try to keep it safe from those nasty, grade-devaluing postmarks!

Happy Mother's Day 2025!

Happy Mother's Day 2025 - from Joe and all the lights of his life, Esther, Averi, Logan, and Cici!

Who could ask for more?  I sure couldn't!

Adventures in Comic-Boxing: Our Changing Language: Unfunny Then, Funny Now!

The English language is (as modern languages tend to be) a living and evolving tongue!  We see examples of it every day.  Older comics often provide inadvertent examples of this, as seen on the cover of SPOOKY SPOOKTOWN #65 (Harvey Comics, Cover Date: October, 1976)!

In 1976, and up until more recent years of "real-time", this would have been just another unfunny gag cover, that relies on the presence of a needless dialogue balloon to pull off what little of a gag there might be. Such was all too typical of Harvey in its later years!

That's not to say that the gag, as such, could not be somewhat funnier with no dialogue and different staging!  Leaving it as-is, but silent, would be a slight - but immediate - improvement.

Or restage it in such a way that still has the guy looking aghast into his fridge at the chicken bones - but angle it from his back... and, in the foreground, have Spooky walking away from the fridge... still carrying the largely-bitten drumstick!  You could even have Spooky drawn in those "outlining-dotted-lines" that were used as visual shorthand for him being invisible. Have a look of satisfaction on his face, and maybe even a "burp!" for added effect!

To be fair, I'll even present an example of when a similar gag worked!  From SPOOKY #45 (Harvey Comics, Cover Date: (July, 1960)...

... With a SILENT COVER GAG that also worked, I might add!

"GHOST TOASTIES" works because (A) it rhymes, and (B) Post Toasties was an actual breakfast cereal of the time!

But, back in the American Bicentennial Year, this superfluous spook-said sentence was simply not funny.

However, let's jump ahead to the 21st Century to find that "GHOSTED" carries an additional - and altogether different - meaning:

"In slang, "ghosted" means someone has suddenly and abruptly ended all communication with you without explanation, typically in the context of a relationship or dating. They stop responding to texts, calls, or other forms of communication, effectively disappearing from your life."

Indeed, Spooky has, quite literally, made the roast chicken "disappear" from the unfortunate midnight-snacker's life!

It would seem that all has gone well for our "Tuff Little Ghost"... at least until he "washes down his ill-gotten foodstuff" with a few too many strawberry sodas!

And you can bet that Spooky wishes this bad karma would GHOST HIM!

Adventures in Comic-Boxing: Blondie's Cook Book!

From the back cover of BLONDIE #7 (David McKay, Cover Date (August-September, 1948), comes this artifact of post-war suburban bliss - BLONDIE'S COOK BOOK!

Not that I advocate women - or men for that matter - "staying-at-home-and-cooking" (quite the opposite, I assure you), but I present it here as a sign-of-its-times, and a unique character tie-in product to the book's starring characters!

But, let's be honest... who wouldn't want a little o' THIS in your home - regardless of who does the cooking!

...Bon Appétit!

Happy New Year 2025!

 Happy New Year 2025!

...Or should I, as that famous TV game show goes, phrase it in the form of a question?

 ...Happy New Year 2025?

As far as my answer goes... I DUNNO!

I see some very bad things (or, at the very least, norm-shattering, chaotic things) ahead for 2025 for both our country and the world as a whole! Most of you can probably guess what, as I nonchalantly sidestep the specifics of a topic that is out-of-bounds at this humble Blog.

Of course, I'm referring to the sudden and unexpected cancelation of THE BATMAN & SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERIES...

...An unfortunate occurrence not to be confused with, or mistaken for, any "real world" events of a political nature - though some of those could stand to be suddenly and unexpectedly canceled too! ...Batman and Scooby, we need your team-ups now, more than ever!  ...There, was that nonchalantly-sidestepping enough for you?  If not, I can try again... Oh, you just want me to move on?  Yeah, I think I should too!

On the other hand, looking inward (as opposed to the increasingly ominous view "outside", with no more BATMAN & SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERIES to enjoy every month), things are looking very bright - and that's where I will tend to keep my attentions focused!

Like HERE!

And HERE!

And the all-great, all-new, all-exciting things comics-wise that are coming in 2025... that, darn it all, I STILL can't talk about!  ...Sorry (at least for now!)

Happy New Year 2025!  ...For Real!

Merry Christmas 2024!

What could possibly make a Christmas merrier than this video?

Okay, okay... any number of things involving peace, health, and prosperity... but you must admit that this rendition of "Jingle Bell Rock" by Averi and Cici might be near the top of whatever remains!

  Merry Christmas 2024!

New York Comic Con 2024

It's been a (all together now) horrifically busy time since our "16 Covers" mara-blog-a-thon, and I've been forced by multiple circumstances (...most of them occurring simultaneously) to "go-dusk" (...we never really "go-dark" here) for a while.

While none of these crazy things have actually abated, I am, nevertheless, off to New York Comic Con 2024!

It's been a while since I've been there!  Last one I attended was 2019.  Stopped going due to the COVID pandemic, and residual COVID concerns in subsequent years.

 But, I'M GOING NOW!!!

See you back here, when I return!

TIAHBlog at 16 Presents 16 Covers -- Number Fourteen: "OG We There Yet?" Part Two!

Yesterday we highlighted DONALD DUCK # 109 (Gold Key Comics, Cover Date: September, 1966), and its lead adventure story "Og's Iron Bed"... but hold on to your "iron bedsheets", 'cause we ain't done "OG-in'" yet!

Let's review a few historical facts about this book, and the day I acquired it...

A bi-monthly Gold Key title, as was DONALD DUCK # 109, with a  SEPTEMBER cover date would have been released in JULY.  Therefore, I would have come across this issue in JULY, 1966.

And, in July, 1966, I would have been delightfully on summer vacation from THIS STRUCTURE...

...Back when it had REAL doors and windows, and no attending dumpsters!

In those primitive and barbaric - yet, paradoxically, warmly nostalgic - days, comic readers (...we weren't FANS back then, we were READERS - and stop READING on my lawn, ya pesky young'un) were at the mercy of the newsstand distribution system!

Okay, maybe not as far back as THAT!  We're talkin' 1966 here!  But what a GREAT picture!

I can count as many as FIFTEEN comics in that photo that are in my collection... one of which I just got last week!  You can probably guess most of them!  ...And, no... I never wore overalls and a beanie-type hat like that! But, advance it somewhere close to 20 years in time, and that could have been yours truly!  Single-digit-age me even kinda LOOKED like that... such an adorable little tyke!  Whatever could have gone so wrong!

ASIDE TO SERGIO: That last paragraph is an example of the loopy and improvisational typing I referred to in another set of comments!  I just looked at the photo and began typing away, on the road to who-knows-what!  Didn't know any of that was coming... and only the vaguest idea of what's coming next... if that!

Where were we?  Oh, yeah... newsstand distribution of comic books!

Most kids looked forward to Saturdays and Sundays - and I was no exception - but MY favorite days of the week were Tuesdays and Thursdays!

WHY?  Because on Tuesdays and Thursdays NEW COMICS were put out on the shelves and racks of small stores all across the (still safe, but inching toward eventual danger by 1966) town in which I lived.  Not only in my town were Tuesdays and Thursdays what we now call "an event", but anywhere else in my region that traveling to was possible!  By 1968-1970, I would be traveling by bus to the far corners of my region in search of increasingly elusive comics on almost a weekly basis - and those days (and those trips) began in me an interest in bus transportation that led me to being a local bus transit advocate today!

From other accounts I've noted, the "Tuesday and Thursday thing" was sort of the standard for the release of new comics.

It was one such Thursday toward the end of July, 1966 that, for reasons long forgotten, I was spending a nice summer afternoon at a nearby aunt and uncle's house, in a decidedly nicer neighborhood than my own - both then and now!

Their house had a nice screened-in attached back porch with a large picnic table -- the very definition of comfort vs. the "uncovered brick fortress" we had at the back of our house!  Though I really did have many years of enjoying 1960s comics out on that "uncovered brick fortress".  And, on that Thursday in July, 1966, I would have a particularly memorable day-of-same in the "nice screened-in attached back porch with a large picnic table" at my aunt and uncle's house!

Earlier in the day we'd gone shopping. In their local strip mall center there was a newsstand store. As it was THURSDAY, I made sure to check it out!  ...AND WHAT DO YOU THINK I FOUND?

Try THIS...

But even more amazing was THIS...

And out on the SAME DAY, just like my 1965 experience with UNCLE SCROOGE #58 and THE FLINTSTONES #28, as detailed HERE!

Only I didn't have to rush through them during my "home lunch period" and go back to school!  NOPE, I had the WHOLE AFTERNOON to enjoy these puppies... or perhaps "ducklings"?

And, enjoy them, I did!  In the LAST POST, I described "Og's Iron Bed" as "one of the best - and most ambitious - Donald Duck stories of the period".  I dove into it first, and it well and truly lived up to my "future-hype"!  Vic Lockman and Tony Strobl's best collaboration, with the possible exception of their consumerism-satire story in THE JETSONS #2 (Gold Key Comics, Cover Date: April, 1963), discussed somewhere in the depths of THIS POST

However, THE BEST OF UNCLE SCROOGE AND DONALD DUCK #1 (Gold Key Comics, Cover Date: November, 1966) was nothing short of a magnificent gift from the Comic Book Gods!

As the cover says, it did indeed reprint "Two Famous Disney Classics"...

"Back to the Klondike"...
 Cover by Carl Barks.

...And "The Ghost of the Grotto".

 Cover by Carl Buettner.

Ah, but there was a THIRD "Famous Disney Classic" to be found in the pages of this 25-cent ticket to Comic-Readers'-Nirvana... Carl Barks' famous story of "The Land of Tralla La"!  The "Bottle Cap Corruption" story!

And, needless to say, it was the first time I saw any of these great Barks stories!

One funny thing is that Carl Barks' art had evolved so much over the years that, while I could tell that  "Back to the Klondike" and "The Land of Tralla La" were by the same artist, I thought that "The Ghost of the Grotto" was by a different artist entirely!

...And that "Giant Robot Robbers" and the other "contemporary-to-1966" Uncle Scrooge stories I was then reading were by a THIRD different artist!

Nevertheless, that was quite an afternoon out on my aunt and uncle's (all together now) "nice screened-in attached back porch with a large picnic table".  One that I recall so vividly to this day!

Of course, with these two ever-memorable comics, it would have also made for a special day on my family's stark "uncovered brick fortress"!  ...Maybe even in some dingy alley, somewhere!  Yes, they were THAT great!

Gosh, I hope that was enough "stream-of-consciousness-typing" to satiate Sergio!  :-)

Finally, what could possibly put a capper on such a perfect day?  ...How 'bout THIS?

It was a THURSDAY, in 1966, remember?

That meant that, by the time I was deposited back home, there was a summer rerun (...remember "summer reruns"?) of Part Two of this week's installment of BATMAN to enjoy on top of all that great Duck stuff (...as opposed to "Stuffed Duck")

"Stuffed Duck"... That's ANOTHER JOKE, SON!

Yeah, after a "joke" like that, I'd run away too!

But, before you do, Dynamic Duo (Aren't you glad I didn't say "Before you DUO"?), stick around for one Bat-moment more as I name  THE BEST OF UNCLE SCROOGE AND DONALD DUCK #1 our Cover Number Fourteen!

Wheee!  Only TWO MORE TO GO, and then I get my life baaack!!!  ...Haaaa-haaaa-heeeee-heeeee!
