Today is "New Gold Key Day" -- #2!

Today, February 14, 2024, is not only Valentine's Day...

(...and what better way to introduce the main subject of this post than with a Classic Gold Key Valentine's Day cover...)

It is also... NEW GOLD KEY DAY #2!

New logo is compared here with the classic (Western Publishing) Gold Key Logo.

For this iconic (yet excitingly new) brand's second foray into the 21st century, Gold Key Entertainment presents BORIS KARLOFF GOLD KEY MYSTERIES #2!

A successor to "Gold Key Classic'sBORIS KARLOFF TALES OF MYSTERY...

...And it's own BORIS KARLOFF GOLD KEY MYSTERIES #1!

You can see my GCD Index/Review of the first issue HERE!

I just picked up my copy of #2 today and, as with the first issue, the mere mention of the Gold Key name, and sight of its iconic logo, just "lights-up" this original Gold Key Kid!

Again, I wish our
"New Gold Key Kids" much success in the months and years to come - and hope they continue to follow in the indelible footprints of their predecessors, and revive a few "funny" titles as well! ...Something which DOES appear to be on the horizon!

And, to bring this post full circle back to Valentine's Day, check out the back cover of BORIS KARLOFF GOLD KEY MYSTERIES #2!

Gold Key Entertainment - and Boris Karloff, wherever he might be - have a special Valentine's Day message for us!  Gotta love it!

"Key" ya real soon!

 UPDATE: February 15, 2024:
In our Comments Section, you will read about Gold Key Entertainment's second title, FIGGY FURTHERMORE THE SPIRIT GUIDE DOG, coming in 2024 - and the Kickstarter campaign to help Gold Key "get Figgy flowing"!

Toward our humble Blog's (...all together now) humble efforts to form all of you into fervent Figgy-followers, we present this Gold Key house ad from the inside-back-cover of BORIS KARLOFF GOLD KEY MYSTERIES #2...

Let's show 'em that "We Dig Figgy"!

Finally, is it just me, or does that white FIGGY FURTHERMORE cover that "Uncle Boris" is holding conjure up images of THIS mid-1960s Gold Key cover?

If so, they are really doing their job well!

I see that Bugs is offering a bouquet of carrots - for rabbits, that must be the equivalent of flowers and a box of chocolates. Very convenient!

On the topic of covers, Boris Karloff Gold Key Mysteries #1 seems to have a very nice one - effectively eerie, and I love that wall of masks (or what we must hope are masks...)

…Very convenient indeed!

Two-for-one! One-stop-shopping, if you will! …If you can call picking your bouquet of carrots from Elmer Fudd’s carrot patch “shopping”, that is!

Um, I hope they are MASKS too but, as of Issue #2 (which I am reading literally at this moment), that remains to be seen. …Though quite an interesting story about the house Old Boris occupies! Yes, he is a character in the framing story – which wraps around two other “Tales of Mystery”, as the title used to say in the old Classic Gold Key days – concerning the origins and the strange movements of the house over many decades.

The BUGS BUNNY cover introducing BORIS KARLOFF GOLD KEY MYSTERIES is also a nice way to remind all of us of the MANY DIFFERENT THINGS that Gold Key could be at its best! …And something I look forward to it being again in the (near?) future.

It's hard to believe that today marks a whole five years since we, the Crew of the Copper-Colored Cupids, first visited your lovely website! And it's certainly been an exciting five years for us - traveling to distant worlds, stamping out hatred and rage and coldness wheresoever we should find it (or trying our best, at any rate!), and making plenty of friends! Oh, we've been all over the multiverse now - worlds of magic and myth, of space-travel and machines, even worlds where the skies are made of gold and the people are made of flowers! But in the end, your blog will always be like a second home to all of us strangely-colored secret societies - and there's certainly no place we'd rather read about comics! Why, if it weren't for your delightful comments section, there's no telling where we'd be now. You inspired us, Joe! So thanks for everything, from all of the Copper-Colored Cupids! And happy Valentine's Day!

Well… Just “COLOR” me honored, Cupids!

We’ve been glad to have you over the years, and wish you’d stop by Washington, DC with some of that “stamping out hatred and rage and coldness” stuff! We sure could use some of THAT over there!

And, you guys – and everyone who comments here – INSPIRE ME! …To keep doing what I’m doing here, despite the all-too-often (all together now) “Horrifically Busy Periods”!

And how appropriate is it that you drop by on Valentine’s Day… The same day – and for the SAME POST – in which Boris Karloff also sends me a back-cover valentine!

The new Gold Key also launched the Kickstarter for their second title yesterday: http://kck.st/49eQBvN

Very different from their first, but still very Gold Key!

Joe Torcivia said...

Yes indeed, Shad!

I didn’t want to jump the gun on this but, now that the campaign is open, I’m pleased to mention that Gold Key Entertainment’s second title will be a funny/funny animal title FIGGY FURTHERMORE THE SPIRIT GUIDE DOG… which DOES appear to have that unique “Gold Key look and feel” to it, making it all the more intriguing.

So much so that I did something that I’m not exactly in the habit of doing… I contributed to the Kickstarter campaign! As you say, “Very different from their first, but still very Gold Key!”

In addition to that, I also created FIGGY FURTHERMORE as a feature at GCD for future indexing, and have reserved the series for such indexing, just as I’ve done with their BORIS KARLOFF title! You can see that newly set-up feature HERE!

Before anyone asks, I have no affiliation with the new Gold Key Entertainment LLC as I have with the Fantagraphics Disney Publications, or have had with prior Disney licensed publishers beginning with Gemstone. (Though I wouldn’t mind if that were to someday change!) What I do in this regard, is because I believe in them and the comics they’ve produced thus far – and I expect they will continue to engender that feeling in me going forward.

HERE is the Shad-supplied link for the Kickstarter campaign, for anyone wishing to join me there.

Finally, I will add to this post, Gold Key’s inside-back-cover ad from BORIS KARLOFF GOLD KEY MYSTERIES #2, in which Boris Karloff introduces Figgy Furthermore, for your information and viewing pleasure.
