Here's an unusual New Year's greeting from DELL FOUR COLOR #149 SMILIN' JACK (Dell Comics, 1947), reprinting a SMILIN' JACK daily newspaper strip from an undetermined New Year's Eve/Day in the 1940s!
As the copyright on the strips in this issue are for 1940, 1941, I'd assume it would have been for the turning of 1940 to 1941... the last New Year's Eve/Day of peace for too long a while. Though, to bring it nicely full-circle, when the strip was reprinted by Dell in 1947, peace reigned once again.
Let's all hope the same applies to 2024!

I understand what you mean, as, of course, the US entered World War II in 1941. That said, the war had been going on since 1939. And throughout the 1930s, there were numerous wars in many parts of the world, which, to varying degrees, served as preludes to World War II.
I say this not to be a smart aleck but in the spirit of your wish for peace to reign in 2024, since the US is not directly involved in either of the two major wars going on now.

I think all people of goodwill, regardless of where they stand on the... all together now... "two major wars going on now" or any other issue, share the little girl's sentiment, which is also your post's sentiment.

I’m not sure you could be a “smart aleck” if you tried, even after consuming numerous energy drinks…and were just stung by a bee! So, I know from whence you come! And, please excuse me for being so “US-centric” in my worldview. I stand corrected and guess it’s all that conditioning about December 07, 1941 (the ORIGINAL “Day That Will Live in Infamy”… we’ve had two more since… in 2001 and in 2021) being the “start” of WWII, that something as horrible as Hitler’s invasion of Poland doesn’t immediately come to mind! …And apologies to any Polish citizens, or those of Polish descent for my embarrassing slip up!
…But, I still mean it about peace in 2024!

Thank you for the correction, Joe - and I'm saying this not only on behalf of my home country, but also on behalf of more than a dozen European nations and large swathes of Africa and Asia that were being directly affected by WWII at the turn of 1940 to 1941 (not to mention then-British colonies, dominions and provinces on other continents, like Canada, Australia or New Zealand).
Sadly, the misconception that the Second World War started in 1941 is something that can be encountered from time to time in US-made content... the infamous "I think World War II just started" line from Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor being one of prime examples. Still, perhaps I'm not entirely objective on this - but I guess being a Pole makes it extremely hard for me to forget what the actual starting date of WWII is. Oh well.
I am very well aware that many readers of this blog (me included) are at various stages of being HORrIFICALLY BUSY, but if anyone is further interested in the subject, an excellent book by American authors called A Question of Honor (https://lynneolson.com/a-question-of-honor/ ) is a good way to get to know how WWII events were perceived from my country's perspective.
And, naturally, I wholeheartedly join you in wishing 2024 could be a year of peace all over the world. We must hope everyone will finally come to their senses and put an end to these senseless conflicts. Until then, take care!

Honestly, you were the first person I thought of when I realized my error… with some fairly obvious reason. And, while there is no excuse for it, a long and steady seepage of “US-made content” is likely an element on the causation list.
“We must hope everyone will finally come to their senses and put an end to these senseless conflicts.” Couldn’t agree more in terms of the world stage – and wish nothing but success for the two nations that were so brutally invaded – but, with regard to “senseless conflicts” (specifically within the confines of the USA), I fear that late 2024-on will be a “You-Ain’t-Seen-Nuthin’-Yet” period!
…Please let me be wrong!
