Adventures in Comic-Boxing: Quash and Stretch!

On the cover of MIGHTY MOUSE COMICS #12 (St. John, Cover Date: August, 1949), Mighty Mouse QUASHES an assassination attempt by merely STRETCHING from a yawn!

Cover art by Terrytoons animator Art Bartsch

"What a Mouse!", as the cartoons used to say!  He's so great that, some days, he doesn't even need to try!

Or, perhaps, in Mighty Mouse's world, evil cats are SO plentiful that you don't even need to throw the proverbial stick to hit one... just stretch your arm - but be sure to have a clenched fist, just in case!

Oh, yes... the animation term "Squash and Stretch", which forms the basis for our title's pun, is discussed in THIS POST!

Finally, if anyone wishes to know more about MIGHTY MOUSE COMICS #12 (... and, honestly, WHO WOULDN'T?), you can read more at my index for this issue at GCD!

I think I agree with your theory that nasty cats are so plentiful in Mighty Mouse's world that he doesn't even need to go looking for them!

I appreciate the extensive cataloging of this issue, and the thoughtful comments regarding the various stories. Would really love to read that article on Margaret O'Brien!

Thanks for the enlightenment in a previous comment that Pearl Pureheart was Mighty's original girlfriend. For some reason, my comics reading of Mighty Mouse as a kid only showed him with Mitzi.

Fun detail: that's a suspiciously un-natural-looking arrangement of rocks Mighty Mouse is lying on, in how chair-like it is. Are we meant to infer that to get his rest, he used his strength to roll some large stones together into the chair he needed? Perhaps even hewed them himself?

Achille:

Mighty Mouse could have gone backward in time and borrowed an outdoor lounge chair from Fred Flintstone… Or he could have gone forward in time and borrowed one from Doctor Smith as seen in the LOST IN SPACE episode “Revolt of the Androids” (1967). See the image added to the post.

…Or, perhaps as you suggest, maybe it was a “DIY” project for him to while away his time as he waits for more cats to show up.

Scarecrow:

Nasty cats are (…almost) as plentiful in Mighty Mouse’s world as nasty humans are in ours! But, unlike our nasty humans, at least the nasty cats make for good stories – and good cover gags!

As for my GCD indexing, I try to do as thorough a job as possible – especially on titles that tend to be overlooked. As with this Blog, I wish to share what it is I like about these things and hope it becomes infectious! The St. John Terry comics are among the most underrated in the funny-animal genre and, whenever price allows, are very definitely worth checking out!

…Besides, I love making up my own “unofficial titles” for covers and stories, when none exist! “Quash and Stretch" being just one of many! It’s great fun – and great exercise to keep the comics-writing skills sharp.

Margaret O'Brien just may be visiting your e-mailbox very soon. …We’re just so accommodating around here!
