There’s Still a Batman Missing!

The possible great news of the 1966 BATMAN TV series coming to DVD, as reported in THIS POST, leaves me with an additional thought.

With even this long-disputed bat-property finally coming to authorized DVD, one is left to wonder where is the 1968 Filmation BATMAN animated series?

UPDATE: February 06, 2014:  It IS coming!  Click HERE for more details!

Where?  Even the Dark Knight Detective doesn't know!

Considering there was a release (though incomplete) for Filmation's SUPERMAN…

AQUAMAN…

And the catch-all, remainder DC HEROES…

Why has this series – which nicely reflected Silver Age Batman comics, because it was written by such Silver Age DC Comics writers as Bob Haney and George Kashdan – never been released to DVD?

Not even released through Warner Archives, like some of these…

So, when Adam West joins Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, Kevin Conroy, Rino Romano, Diedrich Bader, Bruce Greenwood, and other actors who have performed (in body or voice) as Batman “sometime in 2014”, Filmation's voice of Batman, Olan Soule, will still be missing.

...And so will be "Simon the Pieman"!

You won't find ME anywhere else, folks!

R.I.P. Russell Johnson (The Professor).

Russell Johnson, forever known as “The Professor” on GILLIGAN’S ISLAND, passed away on January 16, 2014, at the age of 89.

Johnson’s Professor Roy Hinkley, and the rest of the cast (-aways) of GILLIGAN’S ISLAND have achieved such iconic status that they need no further introduction.

Oddly, Russell Johnson did not appear in the pilot for the very series he would become indelibly identified with.  The Professor there was played by an actor named John Gabriel – but Johnson's version of The Professor was added for the first broadcast episode of GILLIGAN’S ISLAND, and there he would remain.

Beyond his “tropic island nest”, Russell Johnson was known for westerns (Four appearances on GUNSMOKE and three on WAGON TRAIN) and numerous big and small screen products of fantasy, sci-fi, and horror.

Something of a regular presence in ‘50s Sci-Fi cinema, Johnson had a key supporting role in Jack Arnold and Universal’s ultra-classic 3D fifties-fear-fest “It Came from Outer Space” (1953).

Jack Arnold's aliens teach The Professor a "lesson"!
He also appeared in “This Island Earth” (1955), and Jack Arnold’s “The Space Children” (1958).

All in all, he'd probably prefer "Gilligan's Island" to "This Island (Earth)"!

March, 2014 Update:  For one additional ‘50s Sci-Fi Film role of significance, please go HERE!

Of course, GILLIGAN’S ISLAND would reunite Russell Johnson with Jack Arnold, who directed many episodes of that series.

Did The Professor just see a "Jack Arnold monster"?

On TV, he was seen on such genre series as:

·         THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN

·         ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS

·         THE TWILIGHT ZONE

·         THE OUTER LIMITS

·         THE INVADERS

And a special mention for:

·
        BORIS KARLOFF PRESENTS THRILLER
where, in the excellent horror episode

he appears alongside William
Shatner -- with both actors on the
verge of the respective TV roles
that would eternally define
them and their careers!

The things that lie ahead...

Rest in peace, Russell Johnson… and thank you for all the great moments -- on and off The Island!

Is this finally the long-awaited OFFICIAL 1966 Adam West BATMAN TV SERIES on DVD?

Check it out HERE!

Let’s hope!  … That rhymes with “Bat-Rope”!

Won't it be great to see these guys on official, non-bootleg  DVD at last!

Why, even the ANIMATED King Tut is excited!

“Color” Me Pleased!

It took longer than I expected to obtain a copy of Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse by Floyd Gottfredson Color Sundays: “Robin Hood Rides Again”, but was it ever worth the wait!

Beyond the absolute BEST presentation these Floyd Gottfredson Mickey Mouse Sunday newspaper strips have ever had in the United States (…I can’t speak for “The World” -- but, could be!), there are the introductions, essays, and other text features that continue to make the Fantagraphics Gottfredson Mickey Mouse collected series one of the finest archival products on the market!

It doesn't get better than THESE, folks!

Meet Mortimer!  Mickey's sorry HE did!

I have an introductory piece on the “Mickey’s Rival” (which introduced thorn-in-the-side Mortimer Mouse), and “Helpless Helpers” arcs, with Donald Duck and Goofy hampering “Do-It-Yourself-er-Mickey” (page 18), but some the best surprises are to be found elsewhere in the volume!

And, when you can surprise ME, or teach me something I didn’t know about this stuff, I call that REALLY special!

For instance, in “Of Blots and Stressed-Out Bodies” (an appreciation by Tom Neely), I learned that the mystery adversary in the issue below of IDW’s recent POPEYE comic book series was actually a homage to the Phantom Blot.   (page 15)

And J.B. Kaufman, in his foreword “Mickey’s Sunday Best: Moving On”, tells us that “Helpless Helpers”, one of the very arcs I wrote about, marked the first appearance of the post-Dippy Dawg character of GOOFY (“…both his name and his appearance consistent with those of his screen counterpart”) in the Sunday strip.  (page 9)
Remember Dippy?

Wow, if I had only known it was such a milestone for the Goof, I might not have suggested in my intro that the story as a whole might have seemed “stronger overall” by eliminating Goofy’s lone strip and concentrating exclusively on Donald.   Yeah, I really said that.

I hope to make up for that misplaced suggestion in the next volume of Mickey Mouse by Floyd Gottfredson, where I hope to contribute something REALLY special.

It’s the Phantom Blot volume… Don’t miss it!

You wouldn't want to anger the Blot, would you?

UPDATE: Additional illustrations that refer to our Comments Section:

Is this "Dippy" or "Goofy" -- or HALF OF EACH?  You Decide!

And, just because he was mentioned in the comments:  SUPER GOOF!

ADDITIONAL UPDATE: Another illustration below that refers to our Comments Section!  There seem to be as many "surprises" in the Comments, as there are in the book itself!  ...And, that's the best thing a Blogger could ask for!

Where's Mickey, in the "purple section" to the left?  Find out in out Comments Section!

Another Toast to 2014?

Doctor Zachary Smith is either fashionably late in toasting the new year of 2014, or he's just a tad confused -- having been "lost in space" (no capital letters) since 1997.

Either way, I think we can forgive him and hope that by now, after what would soon be about 17 years "out there", he's managed to find the way back to his cherished Earth -- and that his homecoming didn't turn out like THIS!

I've got it!

The (Ahem!) "good" doctor's just toasting the first day of 2014 in which the New York area (and presumably the Northeast as a whole) was spared either snow or below-freezing temperatures!

I'll drink to that one too, "Zack!"

Now, in this scene resembling Friday, January 03, 2014, can anyone explain to my satisfaction how the shovel got to be where it is?

...Anyone, at all?  Huh?

Happy New Year – 2014!

Bugs is probably thinking: "Why did I ever trade-in my hole in the ground for a HOUSE?"

Happy New Year – 2014, to all of you and all of yours!

Though I’d much prefer you left your return wishes in the Comments Section, rather than shout them through my window while I’m sleeping!   …And close that window, it’s COLD!

A NYCC 2013 Moment # 12 NYCC 2013 The Year in Review.

'Twas the night before New Years (2014),

And all through the media,

Are "The Year in Review" features - some are good,

Some are seedier.

So, what the heck,  why not have our very own "The Year in Review" recap post for our wonderful experiences at New York Comic Con 2013!  (Yeah, it's a cheater, but go with it -- it's New Year's Eve!)

Without further ado, here is my series of posts on the festivities -- all gathered in one convenient linking post for you to enjoy… or ignore.

I like the way they begin with the costuming aspects of the Con, and segue into comics as they progress.

Moment # 1:  “Freak-a-Re-do!”

Moment # 3:  “Underwear For Art Thou?”

Moment # 6:  “DC Finally Beats Marvel!”

Moment # 7:  “Bootlegs Get the Boot?”

Moment # 8:  “Unfinished Comic Business!”

Moment # 9:  “The Walking (and almost) Dead!”

Moment # 11:  “Ode (Owed?) to Edith!”

Full disclosure, and I should have mentioned this earlier, all of the costume photos seen in my various NYCC posts were not taken by me at NYCC 2013.  They were merely images from the Internet that were representative of what I saw.   Hope I didn’t mislead anyone in my innocent appreciation of such things.

Happy New Year, and I hope we all get to meet up at New York Comic Con 2014!
