Opposites Attack!

Give up!  I've got you surrounded!
You probably can’t get much more opposite from the subject of OUR LAST POST (…and still remain within the boundaries of “The Things that Interest Me”) than SpongeBob!

But, according to THIS ITEM, our favorite “absorbent, and yellow, and porous (is he)” underwater friend will be seeing the DVD release of his EIGHTH SEASON… with a NINTH scheduled for 2013!

That’s longer than the original FLINTSTONES, and surely longer than any animated series not called THE SIMPSONS or FAMILY GUY!

No sponge is going to sneak up on US!

Amazing, isn’t it?

I think "The Fairly Oddparents" is catching up. And I'm surprised by the success of both, really. They always seemed like parodies of cartoons ... and then I remember I watch shows that also look like parodies as well. :)

Historically, cartoons have often been parodies of “other things”: Movies, TV shows, stories, even real life events – but…

…Cartoons that are “Parodies of Cartoons”? Now THAT’S a concept-and-a-half!

Actually, though I’ve never thought of it in those exact terms, a lot of them WOULD be that! Lots of more modern properties, to be sure!

ANIMANIACS, FREAKAZOID!, DEXTER’S LAB, JOHNNY BRAVO, POWERPUFF GIRLS… and let’s reserve a very special place for that “Cartoon Within a Cartoon” “Itchy and Scratchy”!

Great observation, ‘Rehab! And, thanks to you, I now have a new way of looking at SpongeBob!

It’s time to change the lyrics to the SpongeBob theme song:

“Who exists as a PARODY, under the sea?
“SpongeBob SquarePants!
“Absorbent, and yellow, a TRIBUTE is he…
“SpongeBob SquarePants!”
