It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of George M. Steinbrenner III, principal owner of the New York Yankees since 1973.
Mr. Steinbrenner changed the face of New York baseball, New York sports… and the business of sports in general.
His tenacious desire to win would have him stop at nothing to bring the best in baseball to the grateful citizens of New York. It has been my pleasure to be on hand for the seven World Series championships that George Steinbrenner delivered, and the many “near-misses” that would have satisfied the owners (and fans) of most baseball teams – but not George Steinbrenner.
With the passing of legendary Public Address announcer Bob Sheppard days earlier, this has been an unhappy week for Yankee fans.
Rest in peace, Mr. Sheppard and Mr. Steinbrenner!
