Adventures in Comic-Boxing: A Charlton Variation on an Old Joke?

Old classic jokes are great!  But when CHARLTON does its own variation on one of them - well, (as is the norm with Charlton), anything goes!

Take TOP CAT # 8 (Charlton Comics, Cover Date: January, 1972), and this sequence therein...

WHAT DID THE WIFE SAY WHEN HER HUSBAND ALMOST RAN OVER TOP CAT WITH HIS CAR?

NOTHING!  SHE JUST SAT THERE WITH A "LONG PUSS"!

GUFFAW!  It was such a classic, they didn't even need to TELL THE JOKE... just illustrate it!

...Just as you don't need to tell me to "get out of here"!  I'll just slink-off on my own!

OK, my ignorance is showing: what would the woman in the car be saying in the old classic joke? Clearly I have not read/watched enough of the right stuff.

In the old classic joke, the woman would not be in a car. It goes like this…

What did the lady say when her cat was run over by a steamroller?

Nothing. She just stood there with a long puss!

Here a cat (T.C.) was (almost) run over by a car, and the woman in the car – with her face smooshed against the windshield – does indeed have a long puss!

Of course, I have no proof either way but, just because it’s Charlton, it’s more than a logical assumption that “the joke” somehow factored into that sequence… especially as there was no actual gag payoff to it beyond the smooshing! Not even an awkward/funny line from the husband to cap it.

But, upon reading, I immediately flashed-back to the old classic joke!

GUFFAW!
