Happy New Year 2023!

...Or, might that be 1974 plus 49?

My New Year's resolution for 2023 will be to post more often, and to improve my shamefully atrophied personal communications with all of you!

And, to love these cuties more and more each day!

Feel free to share your resolutions here, or just come back for (hopefully, I resolve) more regular postings!

Happy New Year!

I just HAVE to thin out the ol' comic book collection a bit! Even when I retire I'll never get to read 'em all again.

Happy New Year, Joe! If I come across any Gold Keys I'll run 'em by you first ;)

Happy New Year…and I don’t think I’ll ever get to THAT point!

But, what I *did* do over the past few years was “thin out” the in-flow of NEW comics… more like a CRASH-DIET than a “thin out”!

December 2022 was actually abnormally high for me, with THREE new comics purchased… SCOOBY-DOO WHERE ARE YOU? #119, THE BATMAN AND SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERIES #3 (with some of the best art ever), and GROO: GODS AGAINST GROO #1 – all of which you will find indexed by me at GCD!

I won’t count any of the Fantagraphics stuff toward that total, since I don’t *actually purchase* it, but I WOULD otherwise buy them because they are SO GREAT!

My attentions are primarily set on the old reliable back issues, which are SO MUCH MORE to my taste than the contemporary stuff!

I wonder if that’s a generational thing? Did Golden-Agers feel the same way in the Silver Age? Did Silver Agers feel the same way in the ‘80s and ‘90s? And will the few people that still buy the “new stuff” feel the same way when whatever “Ages” that follow eventually take hold? Hmmm…

Oh, and I should also mention that THE BATMAN AND SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERIES and GROO: GODS AGAINST GROO are both limited series, with 12 for Batman/Scooby and 4 for Groo, so even that total will eventually be reduced.

My New Year's Resolution is to look more like Captain Marvel as depicted on that cover and less like I swallowed a bowling ball. But my resolution does not run to the costume. I have no desire to look like CM save for the slender waist. I'll leave that to the cosplayers. I seriously do plan to slim it back down--a thing that is hard to do at holiday time with the abundance of goodies. Especially now with my New Year's birthday cake to finish. But I have lost weight before and I can lose weight again. My goal is to get there by June in time for the beach weather! And the Beach Party comics starring Donald Duck and Bugs Bunny! (Which I always break out at that time.)

I hope everyone connected with this blog has a fantastic and prosperous 2023!

That’s a great one, Scarecrow… and one I should strive for as well.

While I’m not anywhere near dramatically up in weight, I’m a little higher than where I feel I should be and have begun to eat less and largely (but not completely) eliminate snacking. If only it were easier to avoid eating late at night when I’m up alone watching DVDs… just finished the Second Season of PICARD (much better than the First Season though, typically of today’s television writing, the finale tried to pack in too much that could have been resolved earlier – or never introduced at all, and… Oh, were we talking about eating?)

I also hope to get out more in the coming year… COVID notwithstanding!

Well, Joe, I hope you have more luck with your New Year’s resolution than this guy: https://www.comics.org/issue/167/

But, even if you don’t, fear not. Contrary to your comment on your previous post, this blog is not merely a “once” great blog but a currently great blog.

What makes a blog great? In my opinion, it’s not frequent posts, a large readership, or even a particularly engaged readership (though don’t get me wrong… all of these things help, and, happily, the third one is applicable to your blog).

No, what makes a blog great is whether its posts are worth reading. Your posts are worth reading because they teach me new things, they make me think, and perhaps most importantly, they make me smile.

Keep up the great work. My resolution is to keep reading your blog and commenting on your posts whenever I feel I have something interesting (or hopefully at least kinda sorta interesting) to say.

A Happy New Year to you, Joe, and to all readers of The Issue at Hand!

Thank you for those incredibly kind words! I’m actually touched… Really!

“Your posts are worth reading because they teach me new things, they make me think, and perhaps most importantly, they make me smile.”

Regardless of the (more recent lax) frequency, that is exactly what I strive for in these posts… and, most of all, I want this little community of friends to have FUN, whenever they choose to drop in!

Be warned, I’m going to hold you to that resolution… at least to the best extent I can from my den! :-)

HERE is Sergio’s link for ease of reading… and note that it is from GCD, which I believe to be the BEST source of overall comics information around – and getting better all the time! Thanks also, Sergio, for visiting GCD! I approach my work there with the same standards that I apply to this humble Blog.

As to the link… How odd is it (was it?) to see characters from TWO DIFFERENT COMIC STRIPS come together for one cover gag? I’m no expert on this period but THE GUMPS and MOON MULLINS had no creative commonality, did they? It’s not like Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse sharing a gag. Or, to have a greater degree of separation under the same umbrella… Woody Woodpecker and Chilly Willy.

And, as long as we’re compiling resolutions, I, too, will resolve not to lose my temper during 1937! Of all the New Year’s resolutions I’ve ever made, I believe this one has the best chance for a 12-month success!

In fact, I can do this one while standing on my head… for 12 months… Oooh, blood rushing the wrong way… Oooh, getting woozy… Maybe I should approach this a little a little differe… [goes silent, thuds]

When I come too, I’ll resolve to stop making resolutions for 1937… and post more often!
