Okay, Halloween's Over! (Because I Say It Is!)

All together now... Halloween 2020 isn't over until I say it is!

...But, now I'm "saying it is"!  We've had two-weeks-and-a-day of great Halloween (...and election day) fun, but all good things (...and, election-wise, some bad things) must come to end - and could we end it better than with FLUFFY AND MERVIN?!

...I think not!

FLUFFY AND MERVIN appear through the courtesy of our great friend (...and their creator) Debbie Anne Perry!

And, since they can't be beat, we end Halloween on a very happy and satisfying note... "Simon Says"...

..."Rebo Says"...

...And *I* finally say!  Go forth into November and the holiday season, knowing there will be more TIAH Blog fun coming your way - very soon!

...Oh, and "Averi Says", too!  ...And SHE MEANS IT!

Thank you for the post! Mervin says to tell you and your readers that “Halloween isn’t over until the supermarket runs out of half-price candy.” And even Mervin isn’t foolish enough to tangle with Simon Bar-Sinister or Rebo! (I loved the Donald Duck robot in that story!)
And I hope Averi had a very happy extended Halloween.
It’s interesting to see that Tony Strobl cover based on a scene from Trick or Treat on a comic that doesn’t even have that story in it!

You’re very welcome, Deb!

Fluffy and Mervin are always welcome around here! And I would assume that Mervin is also not foolish enough to tangle with Averi! ...Heck, even *I’m* not THAT foolish!

“ It’s interesting to see that Tony Strobl cover based on a scene from Trick or Treat on a comic that doesn’t even have that story in it!”

So, you thought that TOO, huh? …Well, at least he drew one cover for a book that HAD “Trick or Treat” in it… HERE!

…And HD&L are even wearing the same costumes as on the Donald Duck cover!

That issue was SUCH a disappointment to me! I was looking forward to a Hallowe'en themed story a la "Trick or Treat" and despite the title of the featured story, there was no real tie-in with Hallowe'en at all! It's still a great piece of artwork, and I think now it was probably worth the price just for the cover alone. But still...life works so much better when what's on the cover matches what's in the book. I recall similar disappointments, for example in a Huckleberry Hound cover with Yogi Bear figuring prominently, but not in the pages inside. On the other hand, sometimes a character from inside the book does actually pay a visit to the cover--such as the bird in Flintstones #20. Of course, you could just go with Mary Poppins (as played delightfully by Emily Blount in "Mary Poppins Returns") when she says, "The cover is not the book, so open it up and take a look..."

Scarecrow:

After a full-blown discussion of DONALD DUCK # 127, containing both “Bird-Bothered Hero” and “The Siege of Fort Duckburg”, I’m not about to criticize issue # 140 for ANYTHING!

If, for no other reason, it’s noteworthy for being the first issue of the DONALD DUCK title to have a Whitman variant.

Yes, I realize that, after just shy of a decade of covers that were illustrative of the lead story found therein, one had every right to expect a Halloween-themed lead story in that issue… but that trend (which I liked very much, as it harkened back to the DELL FOUR COLOR days), was about to end soon anyway – with gag covers becoming more of the norm.

As for Huckleberry Hound covers, perhaps Yogi Bear was on them because they were reprints? I can think of only ONE issue where that occurred on a new cover - HERE!

In fact, Western went out of its way to accurately portray the situation of Yogi “moving-out” of Huck’s show and getting his own as seen HERE IN THIS ORIGINAL and HERE IN THIS REPRINT!

I even say so, in the NOTES on the cover illustration in the GCD INDEX OF THE REPRINT! Check it out!

Besides, if we judged comic books strictly on their covers, what would we think of those early ‘90s Harvey reprint comics that were made up of the 1970s Charlton Hanna-Barbera material… but with new, good covers by Scott Shaw! Like THIS ONE! That may have been the ultimate cheat! But, ‘90s Harvey (after the original family owners were gone) was that kind of “con-job” outfit!

Say what you will about Charlton, at least their covers accurately represent their interior content!

"The cover is not the book, so open it up and take a look..." YEAH! I like that – a lot!
