More Melon!

In THIS POST, our friend Achille Talon introduced us to the wonderful Franco-Belgian comic, from which he has taken his screen name, "Achille Talon".  A comic that has been (...far too few times, alas) translated into English as "Walter Melon".

Achille has followed this up with another Walter Melon gag, which I enjoyed so much I asked if I could share it on this Blog.

Without further ado, here is Walter Melon in "Long Bow" with (as we say in the IDW Disney comics) Translation and Dialogue by Achille Talon!  ...I'd say he has a future in this business!

Click to Enlarge! ...Or, just read it "panel-by-panel" below!

Well, you learn something new every day! Today I learned what a song I'd heard many times before is called: the "Yakety Sax"! I didn't get the reference, so I googled it and found a recording of it on YouTube. And, to my surprise, I was familiar with the music, but just didn't know the name of it. Who says comics aren't educational?

Needless to say, based on the previous post about him, I'd agree that the "Yakety Sax" is the perfect "anthem" for Walter Melon.

Very funny gag, and great job translating it, Achille Talon! Though, in my humble opinion, the final panel would have been funnier if Walter had commented on the minister's bad manners. Like, "Sheesh! What an ungracious host!" or something along those lines. That minor quibble notwithstanding, great job, Achille!

I loved the "Yakety Sax" reference because I’m a huge fan of Benny Hill, and that was his regular closing theme – as he would run off (not unlike Carl Barks’ Donald Duck) with an angry mob chasing him!

I actually like the final panel as Achille did it. It cements the visual gag, leaving no doubt as to what we’ve just witnessed.

Oh, and while I have you, why don’t you send the new URL for your Blog. I know it moved, because you’d announced that in advance – but the old URL does not direct us curious onlookers to the new address.

Not a problem, Joe. The new URL is https://alcazargazette.blogspot.com. I'm glad you find my blog interesting.

By the way, I'm still working on my Vic Lockman tribute. It's not that it's going to be a particularly amazing piece, mind you, so don't get too excited. It's just that I don't often have a chance to actually work on it. But hopefully I will finish it and publish it soon.

Thanks for the new URL for your Blog!

I urge everyone to go there – especially to see Jaime’s SUPERB tribute post on Beetle Bailey creator and famed cartoonist Mort Walker, who just left us at the age of 94!

Jaime did this SO WELL, that I may not even put up such a post of my own – just linking to his AND to the links provided therein, will tell you everything you need to know. HERE is the link to that post!

I am also looking forward to your post on Vic Lockman! If the Mort Walker post is any indication, I’m certain it will be heartfelt and personally meaningful!

Joe:

Thanks very much for your very kind words about my Mort Walker post. I'm gratified you liked it so much.

I would encourage you, though, to write your own post on Mort Walker (if you would like to do so, of course). To me, it's always fascinating to see what cartoonists' work has meant to different people. Given your unique position as a translator and dialogue creator for IDW, your perspective on what Mort Walker's work means to you would be particularly interesting to read about.

I just may do that… although being “a translator and dialogue creator for IDW” would have little bearing on my opinion of Mort Walker as a great cartoonist and a formidable creative force in the field of newspaper comic strips, as I don’t feel that his legendary status and position in the field has any sort of overlap with my microscopically minor one. …Appreciate the thought, though!

Unfortunately, I have also have another death to report on first, as the post was prepared at the same time as the “Walter Melon” post and has already been queued-up. That one will be up on Monday morning… before most folks read this comment.
